9 & 10 February 2004

Monday 9 February 2004
The two hostels whose names we had were both full so we found the tourists information office and obtained a couple more names of nearby hostels. While seeking them out we came across another hostel which was also full. So with some anxiety we tried Ellenhaus, one of the hostels on our list. Not only did they have a room but it was one which was exceedingly comfortable and with ensuite.
After tea the sun came out and so we took a stroll around town which was very much based on tourism being on the shore of Lago Llanquihue. The city was founded by German colonists in 1854 and had a German style of architecture.

After packing our bags and putting them into store we took a walk to try to get up to Cerro Phillipi. First we walked west around the side of the lake until the road turned to gravel and we saw a path ahead which first took us between a few houses and then to a disused railway line. We turned right along the line for a few metres before spotting a path going directly up the hill through the trees. The path was extremely steep; we were only just able to maintain a foothold. However, being a small hill and taking the direct route, we were soon at the top with a view back out over town, a flagpole, a monument to Lieutenant Colonel Phillipi - one of the leading pioneers of the area adorned the summit. And a road down. The day which had started off with a few clouds cleared to a bright blue sky. Returned to town via the road to get food for our bus journey, and then have lunch. Collected our bags from the hostel and carried them just across the road to catch the 2.30 bus to Temuco.
Drove north along the dual carriageway of Route 5, retracing the road that we had come down on. The sun shone brightly and it was quite warm in the bus especially when we stopped, we could have done with something a bit cooler.
