This is the journal of a very special journey with some remarkable people, many of whom were widely travelled with tales to tell. The majority of our fellow passengers came from the UK, and the rest, with only three exceptions, came from North America and Australasia
To lead us we had Dennis Mense who has been guideing Antartica tours for twenty years. Assisting him was Robert Burton the naturalist and historian, who has been going to the Antarctic since he left university many years ago; Callan Duck who on the trip was the ornithologist but whose specialisation is seals; Fritz Koerner the glaciologist who had spent his early years in Antarctica when dog teams were still allowed and who, while appreciating birds, did not appreciate birders; and finally Shannon Fowler who had recently gained her Phd studying the diving physiology of Australian sea-lions. To assist there was Heidi Krajewsky, Steve Anstee and Tyson Mackay who ran the zodiacs as well as provide additional information.
And finally there was the crew who kept us fed, clean and safe, whether on board or hopping on and of zodiacs
Not only was the weather kind to us, with only mildly rough seas, but the wildlife was also obliging. So combined we were able to get some amazing photos as well as get to places we never dreamed possible.
